Hasan Suzer Etnographic Museum
The house was built at the beginning of this century in Hanifioglu Street in Gaziantep's Bey District. After changing owners several times, it fell into a very dilapidated state and was bought by a businessman, Mr. Hasan Suzer. The house was restored and given to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with the condition that it was to be used as the Hasan Suzer Ethnographical Museum.

The building comprises three stories above a cellar carved out of the bedrock. It has three entrances, two opening onto the main street and one onto a side street. The large decorated gate in the front facade leads to the inner courtyard, while the smaller door leads to the guest-room part of the house.
At the south-west corner of the courtyard there is a separate two-storied building that has a living room on the upper floor, the kitchen and toilet are located on the ground floor. This building was used by the domestic servants. The courtyard, which was given the name "hayat," has a floor made with coloured stones and is a fine example of stone craftsmanship.

The cellar is made up of two rooms that open onto each other but with a difference of about 2 meters between their ground levels. In this cave-like basement there are storage jars for grape-molasses and olive oil, and compartments for the storage of other foodstuffs. A well and a large handloom may also to be found in the cellar.

The ground floor comprises two rooms, the kitchen (called the "ocaklik"), and the bathroom. The furnace used for heating the house and two staircases to the first floor are also on the ground floor. The bathroom displays the characteristic features of a Turkish bath and is heated by means of smoke rising from the furnace below. The room to the right of the entrance is the Tandir Room. The name "tandir" indicates the use of a local or regional system of heating that consisted of a buried stone oven on top of which was placed a pedestal and a wide quilt for seating.
On the first floor there is a fountain that is worthy of special attention because of its stone carving and other decorations. There are also three rooms that look out towards the "hayat:" one is the "bride room," another is the living-room and the third is a guest-room, where the male visitors were received.
Two of the rooms on the second floor were arranged as the "haremlik section" or private quarters for the owner's family. On the third floor there is a glass paneled room, and a pigeon loft. This part of the house was designed as a quiet corner for relaxation.
The building is furnished with objects from the Gaziantep region in order to reflect the function of each section of the house. A lively presentation has been attemped with the aid of mannequins. It is hoped that the Hasan Suzer Ethnographical Museum will contribute to the touristic attractions and cultural life of the Gaziantep region.
